Circad Creates ‘Speaking SKY’ – a Low Cost Electronic Programme Guide on SKY for Blind People
Posted on 13th December 2004
Modern TV programmes have disability access for the blind, including audio description. The program guide however still requires menu navigation using a remote control. Circad were asked to design a product that would retail for under £100 to allow the Electronic Program Guide on SKY to be used by a blind person.
We created Speaking Sky, a product that connected between a standard Television set and the SKY box.
Working in real time it decoded infrared signals from the Sky remote control, then captured screen shots from Sky TV into a microprocessor. The screenshots were analysed using optical character recognition, and announced through the TV's own audio by a text to speech processor.
